The HeaRt of Leadership

Human Relations really is the heart of leadership. Whether you are a supervisor with a small team or an executive, there is more to your role than being a manager of projects or even departments: you are a leader of people.

While personal relationships are of course very important, charisma and force of personality cannot hold together anything larger than the smallest of organisations; all staff need to have an appreciation of boundaries and an understanding of protocols established for your organisation.

Although the character and disposition of each employee contributes to organisational culture, it is the consisitency and fairness of how staffing issues are resolved that underpins morale. This consistency is best achieved with comprehensive HR policies and procedures.

Aside from the legal requirement to have HR policies to comply with legislation and regulations, the benefits of having a comprehensive suite of HR policies are pervasive. The cost in time and resources to go beyond the minimum is an investment that will pay for itself many times over.

While it may sound daunting, it need not be as difficult or expensive as you might first imagine. Of course the policies and procedures must be uniquely appropriate to the particular circumstances of your organisation. However, much time can be saved by starting with a set of templates and then adapting them.
